Dartington hives offer a new approach for making beehives from 18mm exterior grade plywood.
The design range includes four lengths of hive, as well as five possible styles: Manor Hive, Country Hive, Extended Deep Hive, Intermediate Deep Hive and Square Deep Hive.
The standard model Dartington Long Deep (DLD) Hive is 940mm long and holds 21 British Standard 14" x 12" brood frames between two insulated dummies.
This is topped by four standard honey-boxes each holding five BS shallow frames. The design for the basic model assumes that there is no need to move the hive once it is installed in the apiary or garden.
The Dartington Extended Deep (DED) Hive
is 1170mm long overall, and holds 27 British Standard 14” x 12” brood frames between two insulated end-dummies. The hive can be sub-divided by five or even more divider boards, thus creating up to six queen-rearing nuclei within the same hive body. Up to five standard honey-boxes can be placed on top of the DED hive. Alternatively, honey can be stored on the 'horizontal' system, avoiding need to use honey-boxes - the beekeeper need only lift individual deep frames which weigh about 3.5 kilos or 8lbs.
The intended use of the DED is for rearing new queens in three 6-frame nuclei, or six 3-frame nucs, ranged behind the main brood nest of the parent colony, which is held on 9 deep frames. These nucs are ideal for starting new colonies.
The Dartington Intermediate Deep Hive (DID) is 710 mm long, and holds fifteen British Standard 14" x 12" brood frames between two insulated dummies. It is covered by six deep honey-boxes each holding five BS standard frames 8 1/2" deep. It enables a full-sized brood nest to develop on a single level and for migratory beekeeping it can be moved by two people.
The Dartington Square Deep (D SD) Hive is an economic alternative to the British National Hives for conventional beekeeping. It is 475mm square, and holds 11 British Standard 14" x 12" brood frames between two insulated dummies. It is covered by six deep honey-boxes, arranged in three layers.
