The release of Teagasc's first Organic Production Business Plan has been strongly backed by Minister for Food and Horticulture at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mr. Trevor Sargent T.D. After Teagasc Director Professor Gerry Boyle's presentation, the minister spoke very positively on the topic of the business plan.
Minister Sargent said that it was a well timed publication given the Governments commitments to "expand the organic sector." By 2012, this programme aims to convert at least 5% of acreage to organic farmland. Minister Sargent stated that the actions as described in the Teagasc Business Plan will be added to the Government action plan, due released soon, in order to reach the 5% target. The Minister also complemented the commitment of Teagasc to the organic food sector.
A DVD on organic farming is due to be produced as one of the initiatives of the Business Plan. Minister Sargent said that his department would be happy to back this and concluded that “this practical guide will be essential viewing for all interested in learning more about organic production.” The future of organic farming in Ireland appears to be bright. |
