This week Mr Michael Doran, IFA National Livestock Committee Chairman, reminded all suckler farmers to apply for the new €80 Suckler Cow Welfare and Quality scheme to the Department of Agriculture before the March 31st closing date. Mr Doran said this is a unique opportunity for suckler producers and they must make their application before March 31st in order to benefit from the scheme over the next 5 years. He emphasised the point that after March 31st farmers will not be able to apply.

Mr Doran said that so far 45,600 suckler farmers have already applied for the scheme out of a total of over 60,000. He said this makes up 76% and he urged the remaining 14,000 producers to make their application propmtly.

Mr Doran outlined that applications are currently coming in at the rate of 250 per day.

The IFA National Livestock Committee Chairman said the Department estimate that applications for up to 800,000 suckler cows have been received up to now.
