A new battery recycling scheme has been approved by Environment Minister John Gormley T.D., a move that has been well received by the IFA. The scheme will allow members of the public to return used batteries without charge, either to retail outlets selling the same type of batteries, or other authorised collection points, including local authority civic amenity sites. The Chairman of the IFA Environment committee, Mr. Pat Farrell, said “Today’s approval means that from the 26th of September 2008 anyone can return a battery free of charge to a location which sells the equivalent type of battery and there is no requirement to buy a battery to avail of this service.”

He continued saying, “Each year farmers use various sizes and types of batteries for a range of purposes such as livestock fencing and in tractors and other farm machinery. Farmers have shown through there support for other recycling initiatives such as the IFFPG farm plastic recycling that they fully support environmentally friendly recycling and I have no doubt that farmers will support this initiative also.”

Mr. Farrell concluded saying, “The next step in these producer responsibility projects is to ensure that REPAK use the funds paid by the various fertiliser and agro-chemical companies to establish a similar recycling scheme."
