The new Council for COFORD has been addressed by the Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food with responsibility for Forestry Ms Mary Wallace TD at the council's first meeting. COFORD (National Council for Forest Research and Development), is a State agency supported by the Minister's Department.
In a welcome speech to the new Council, Ms Wallace took the opportunity to “formally recognise the outstanding work of the previous Council which has certainly made a huge contribution to forestry here in Ireland”. Minister Wallace outlined how COFORD has been the leading researcher into the contribution to the economy that the forestry sector makes, the environment and society generally in Ireland, commenting most notably on its efforts on environmental issues such as climate change and the part forestry plays in that regard. Furthermore she said that she would like to see COFORD broadening the 'development' aspect of its remit.
After the meeting, Minister Mary Wallace officially launched the latest COFORD report Engineered Wood Products in Ireland, put together by the University of Limerick Wood Technology Centre and BRE (Building Research Establishment) in the UK, edited by Bill Robson. Speaking on the report the Minister said: “There is food for thought in this report for all sectors of the forest industry in Ireland, particularly for growers to realise the importance of growing quality wood, and of course for the processing and end using sectors to realise the opportunities that Engineered Wood Products in Ireland identifies.” |
