IFA President Padraig Walshe met with Taoiseach Brian Cowen last Saturday afternoon as farmers gathered in Tullamore demanding the veto to stop WTO cuts.
Speaking after the meeting, the IFA President said he had re-iterated to the Taoiseach the damage that the current WTO deal on offer in Geneva would do to farmers, the food industry and rural Ireland. Mr. Walshe said that the veto decision is the Taoiseach’s responsibility and the livestock industry could not be "sold out" for Mandelson’s promises on services. The IFA President said "At this afternoon’s meeting, I reminded the Taoiseach that he said on June 3rd: 'the WTO deal would require agriculture to bear a disproportionate burden while delivering little in other sectors and is therefore unacceptable to the Government.'" He also noted that any WTO agreement must not endanger our agricultural interests. |
