The Minister for Agriculture recently announced an extension to the slurry spreading period to which IFA President Padraig Walshe reacted by calling this extension 'inadequate.'

Yesterday, Brendan Smith TD, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, opened the 2008 World Holstein Friesian Conference and Show in Killarney. This is the first time the event has ever been held in Ireland and it is being hosted by the Irish Holstein Friesian Association (IHFA). The conference is held every four years with delegates and representatives from the 40 member countries of the World Holstein Friesian Federation in attendance at each event.

The IFA have launched and initiative on renewable energy generation on farms. Speaking at the launch IFA President Padraig Walshe said that micro power generation have many different sources including wind, solar and anaerobic, and said it has the potential to help reduce Ireland's dependence on fossil fuels and our greenhouse gas emissions. It Could also create jobs with the micro energy industry that would be set up around it.

Trevor Sargent TD, Minister for Food and Horticulture at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, officially launched the Organic Feasibility Study for County Kerry last Monday. Minister Sargent commended the South Kerry Development Partnership on the initiative and said that the study was timely as the Government recently committed to making 5% into areas of organic production by 2012.
