Brendan Smith, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, said recently that, while the Government is still committed to delivering Ireland's contribution to the target of a 20% reduction in the EU's greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, “making significant cuts from agriculture will be very difficult”.

Tony Killeen, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, has welcomed the outcome of the fisheries consultations between the Faroe Islands, Norway and the European Community on the control of mackerel in the North-East Atlantic for 2009.

In a speech at a Poultry and Egg Conference, held by Bord Bia, in Monaghan yesterday, Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith called for country of origin labelling for poultry, saying; “not alone do consumers want country-of-origin information in relation to poultry, but they deserve and are entitled to it.”
