Richard Kennedy, Chairman of the IFA National Dairy Committee, is advising all co-ops to maintain their milk price until Spring 2009. Mr. Kennedy said the announcement by the EU that it would begin the Aid to Private Storage scheme for butter on 1st January 2009, 2 months earlier than usual, was an important step to stabilise dairy markets. On top of this, the US Dollar has been continually strengthening, making European dairy products more competitive on the world market while reducing the competitiveness of US products.

Last Friday, Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith officially opened a new Bord Bia office in New York. The New office is situated in central Manhattan in the same building as the Irish Consulate, and other Government agencies such as Enterprise Ireland and Tourism Ireland and will ensure a fully joined up and synergistic relationship between all Irish Government agencies operating in the area. Minister Smith is heading a week-long Enterprise Ireland investment and trade promotional campaign.

Sean O’Leary, Vice President of the IFA Munster branch and Chairman of the IFA Climate change working group, has criticised Environment Minister John Gormley’s short sighted comments, encouraging young people to stop eating beef. Mr. O'Leary said; “Irish farmers produce the most environmentally sustainable beef in Europe. Minister Gormley must not mislead young people and deprive them from a key source of protein.”
