David Wilkinson, IFA Countryside Chairman, has asked the Minister for Environment, John Gormley to acknowledge and address the differences between rural and urban families with regard to calculating the proposed carbon tax. The IFA Countryside Chairman was speaking in relation to an ESRI report which stated that rural families would be worst affected by the proposed carbon tax setting them back in excess of €208 per year. |

Last night, 700 furious Glanbia suppliers met in Kilkenny as a follow up to the Dungarvan meeting of three weeks ago. At this meeting, organised by the IFA, farmers turned up to hear what the Glanbia Chairman and Board Members present at the meeting had to say about what would be done to address the two main issues raised in Dungarvan: the need to reimburse the premature and unwarranted June 1.5c/l price cut, and the need for Glanbia to use its scale and commercial clout to pay the top milk price in the country. |

Colum McDonnell, the IFA Grain Committee Chairman, has announced that crop development around the country has been slow due to the unseasonal cold and wet weather in recent weeks, and despite early predictions for a bumper harvest of over 2.4m tonnes, that is unlikely to occur. |

The Chairman for the IFA National Dairy Committee, Richard Kennedy, has said that a meeting will take place tomorrow (Tuesday night) in Kilkenny’s Newpark Hotel at 8.30 pm, to which the Chairman of Glanbia and all Board members have been invited. Mr. Kennedy expressed his opinion that it is the responsibility of the Glanbia Board to follow up on the strong demands made by suppliers in Dungarvan three weeks ago to retract the June 1.5c/l price cut, and to pay a top milk price. |
