Speaking at an IFA sheep protest at the Department of Agriculture yesterday, IFA National Sheep Committee Chairman Henry Burns called on the Minister Brendan Smith to follow through on his clear commitment to the country’s 34,000 sheep farmers and announce immediately a Sheep Maintenance Payment secured at the Health Check negotiations in Brussels last week.

Minister for Fisheries and Forestry Tony Killeen announced yesterday the launch of the third phase of the Bioenergy Scheme. The scheme was set up in 2007 on a pilot basis to provide establishment grants to farmers to plant willow and miscanthus over the period 2007 to 2009.

Brendan Smith, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, said at the ICMSA in Limerick yesterday that the deal struck at the CAP Health Check negotiations to secure a net increase of over 9% in additional quota, combined with the retention of essential market support measures, was a fantastic achievement. Minister Smith said he is optimistic for the future of milk production in Ireland due to the outcome achieved by him in Brussels last week, while also acknowledging the volatility of international dairy markets at present. Referring specifically to the milk sector, Minister Smith said that “the deal on milk was a phenomenal success for Ireland and will allow dairy farmers unprecedented access to milk quotas”. “This deal is good for farmers, good for processors and good for the Irish economy”, the Minister said.

The Minister for Agriculture, Brendan Smith, has described the claims that Irish farmers would lose money from the CAP Health Check as “totally misleading”. Minister Smith said, “In fact Irish farmers will obtain increased payments of over €70 million over the next four years.”

Speaking from Brussels last Thursday, President of the IFA Padraig Walshe said that Minister Smith's failure to stop an increase in modulation cuts on the Single Farm Payment will result in another direct hit on the incomes of individual farmers on top of the Government’s own Budget cuts.
