Pig producers met in Abbeyleix on Tuesday to voice their concern at the continued losses being incurred by producers.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the processing sector, as well as millers, who are increasingly concerned at their large financial exposure to producers that are losing money on a weekly basis.

When it comes to regulations determining when and how slurry may be applied then Dutch farmers lead the world.

Rather than view slurry as a useless bi-product that needs to be disposed of as quickly and as cheaply as possible, many farmers are now realising that improved slurry management decreases the dependency on expensive artificial fertiliser.

The recent All-Island Grid Study has failed to recognize the role that Irish farmers could play in reducing carbon emissions. The IFA National Environment Committee Chairman, Tom Dunne criticized the report saying, “This study has failed to recognize the extent to which farmers can play a pivotal role in carbon emission reduction while providing a secure energy supply through renewable electricity, heat and transport fuel initiatives.”

Mr Michael Maguire, Chairman of the IFA Pig Producers Committee said he was disappointed that Glanbia Plc had decided to exit the pig processing industry.

The Chairman of the IFA Pig Producers Committee stressed how important pig producers have been for Glanbia. As purchasers of animal feed and inputs from Glanbia it is inconceivable how Glanbia is now cutting pig farmers adrift. Mr Maguire said he will be seeking assurances on the full reopening of the Edenderry plant which is operating on a care and basic maintenance since the devastating fire in August 2007.

H5N1 strain in swans more similar to European outbreak PDF Print E-mail

A ministerial statement issued by Hilary Benn earlier today has stated that the strain of H5N1 avian flu virus discovered in the latest outbreak in Dorset has greater similarities to recent outbreaks in Eastern Europe than the strain discovered in East Anglia last November.
