The staff of FarmingPages.com would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  We hope you enjoy this short story which was emailed to us.  The story was sent in by Denis Cronin, formerly of Agway Milling Ltd.

Mollie was bought as a two year old filly at the Tallow Horse Fair in 1937 by my grandfather, Joe Forrest, who ran a mixed farm at Hollyhill, Blarney Road, Cork.  She spent her early working life assisting “the stallion” with a multitude of farm tasks such as tilling the fields, following the reaper and binder, mowing the hay and transporting the excess corn not required for winter feeding to the merchants’ stores.

Following a tradition started during the height of the Cold War, the military organization responsible for securing North American airspace turned its attention on Christmas Eve to tracking Santa Claus as he makes his way from an undisclosed North Pole location to chimneys across the world. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), based in Colorado Springs, reported Wednesday that the rosy-cheeked gift-bearer had a successful launch and was making his anticipated rounds. NORAD — motto: “Deter. Detect. Defend.” — uses radar, satellites, Santa Cams and fighter jets to keep track of the jolly elf and his reindeer-driven sleigh.

Minister Brendan Smith T.D., today announced the award of ex-gratia payments of €15,000 to Cavan SPCA and €5,000 to Joan's Arc, Glangevlin to assist in their work during 2009. This is part of an overall package of various grant aid being made immediately to 110 animal welfare organisations throughout the country to assist in their work in 2009.

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith TD and the Minister for Food and Horticulture, Trevor Sargent TD have announced details of grant-aid of €16.7 million under the Department's Marketing and Processing Scheme.

On Tuesday Last, IFA National Dairy Committee Chairman Richard Kennedy said that the milk prices at the moment would hit farmers’ profitability hard next Spring, with seasonally lower constituents and higher volumes produced –  farmers will not be able to take further milk price cuts.
