Following the sale of Greencore Malt to the French co-op Axereal for €116m, IFA President John Bryan expressed his concern over the security of malting growers’ contracts into the future. Mr. Bryan said he intends to meet with the company as soon as possible to discuss the future of these contracts and ensure they are continued.

Speaking at the National Potato Conference and Trade Show in Dublin yesterday the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) President John Bryan warned that the viability of Irish farmers is being threatened by the retailers. Mr Bryan also stated that farmers cannot continue to maintain producing below production costs to satisfy the downward price pressure being demanded by the retailers.

Agriculture Minister Brendan Smith has met with a delegation of MEP’s to discuss the future of the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) after 2013. The delegation included Mr. George Lyon, Pat Gallagher, Liam Aylward and Marian Harkin.
