Agriculture minister Brendan Smith yesterday announced how capital from the EU emergency dairy compensation fund will be allocated in Ireland. Ireland’s share in the funding was calculated based on milk production for 2008/2009 and on this basis Ireland has received €11.5 million. Minister Smith said he had decided to allocate the money on a flat rate basis after consulting with the various stakeholders in the dairy sector.

IFA Deputy President Eddie Downey said the EPA/ESRI Strive report shows how Government policy decisions continue to discriminate massively against rural Ireland. Following the findings of the EPA/ESRI Strive report the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) have stated their opposition to the governments carbon tax.

The Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Measures (TAMS) due to be introduced soon have been described as nonsensical by the Irish Farmers Association (IFA). The IFA Rural Development Chairperson Tom Turley made the statement following a meeting with department of agriculture officials that using selection criteria would lead to the exclusion of some farmers from grant aid.
