Agriculture Minister Brendan Smith addressed the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) meeting in Paris on Thursday calling for a "joined-up" approach by the international community to the twin challenges of fighting hunger and dealing with climate change. Mr Smith highlighted the issue of food security particularly in the context of a global population, which is expected to reach 9 billion by 2050. |

Agriculture Minister Brendan Smith TD has announced plans for the allocation of the second of five annual 1% increases in milk quotas agreed under the so-called "health check" of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform. One quarter of the increase will again be set aside to support new entrants to milk production and the balance will be allocated as a 0.75% increase in quota on a permanent, saleable basis for every producer active on 1 April 2010. |

Agriculture minister Brendan Smith yesterday announced how capital from the EU emergency dairy compensation fund will be allocated in Ireland. Ireland’s share in the funding was calculated based on milk production for 2008/2009 and on this basis Ireland has received €11.5 million. Minister Smith said he had decided to allocate the money on a flat rate basis after consulting with the various stakeholders in the dairy sector. |
