The IFA are saying that the construction industry will be brought to a standstill as a result of the end of year deadline for the completion of work under the Farm Waste Management Scheme (FWMS). They say this can be avoided if flexibility is given to 20,000 farmers to complete work under the scheme. This stern message was given by the IFA, the Irish Farm Building Contractors Association and the Irish Concrete Federation in a joint briefing in Dublin on the FWMS and the construction industry in rural areas. The President of the IFA said; “The end of year deadline to complete work is unreasonable, given the scale of investment required to bring farmers up to the highest possible environmental standards.” |

Michael Berkery, General Secretary of the IFA, today announced to the Association’s Executive Council that he is to retire as General Secretary. Mr. Berkery took up the position in April 1983 and has served over 25 years as General Secretary. |
